Hugh Grant has starred in some of the most iconic romantic comedy films of all time, and, to this day, refers to one of his characters as "despicable" and "nauseating."

The Sense and Sensibility standout recently sat down with Vanity Fair to discuss the character that he feels had "no balls," but one that played a crucial role in the evolution of his career.

Referring to 1999's Notting Hill, the star revealed:

"Whenever I’m flicking the channels at home after a few drinks and this comes up, I just think, Why doesn’t my character have any balls? There's a scene in this film where she's in my house and the paps come to the front door and ring the bell and I think I just let her go past me and open the door. That's awful."

Though the film garnered immense success and went on to be remembered as one of the best romantic comedies ever made, it certainly did not help Grant in the romance department over the last few decades.

"I've never had a girlfriend, or indeed now wife, who hasn't said, 'Why the hell didn't you stop her? What's wrong with you? And I don't really have an answer to that — it's how it was written. And I think he’s despicable, really."

So, where are Notting Hill's William Thacker and Anna Scott (played by the lovely Julia Roberts) today? In a 2020 interview with Collider, Grant assured that they were likely long divorced by now.

"I’m sure that my character in Notting Hill and Julia Roberts’ character have been through the ugliest imaginable divorce with really expensive, nasty lawyers."
