It's a.....PEN!

I wanted to post this a month ago but I'm just now getting to it.

A month ago, Steve and Falen gave me a pen for my 25th anniversary at KDWB.  As you can see it's a beautiful pen and I love it!

There's a reason why they gave me a pen.  Here's the story.

When I was 21, I left my hometown of Colorado Springs to go work on my first morning show. My boss back then was only about 25 but he was the kindest, most professional and talented 25 year old you'd ever want to work for.

I'll never forget, when I left, he gave me this pen and told me, "This can be your 'bit' pen," meaning I could use it to write bits for my morning show. And that's exactly what I did.  This was before people owned a computer to do work on.  I still have notebooks somewhere full of bit ideas, song lyrics, etc. that I wrote with that pen.

And of course, I still have the pen. Here it is.

Now, when someone leaves our show on good terms (and most of them have) I give them a pen as a going away gift.

About 10 or 12 years ago, we had an assistant named Miranda who was wonderful and talented and kind and we loved her.  We took her to a going away lunch at Rudolph's in Uptown. I put her pen in a big gift bag. When she opened the bag, she pulled out some tissue paper, then the small box with the pen, looked at it, and then kept digging through the bag until she saw there was nothing else in it.

She looked back at the pen box, opened it, and trying hard not to show her disappointment, she said, "It's...a...pen!"

Steve and I and Corey Foley laughed our asses off because she didn't get it.  After I told her why I got her a pen, I think she appreciated it more, but we always gave her a hard time for it. She might say "Good morning Dave!" and I'd say, "It's...a...pen!"

That's why Steve and Falen got me this beautiful pen.  Thanks you two. I'll treasure it.
