There’s no doubt body shaming is rampant over the Internet, but apparently it’s now seeping into our apps. Specifically, the Google Maps app is being called out for a new feature that some suggest could be sending the wrong message.
The latest update to the iOS Maps app measures distances between places in relation to calories burned, as in if you walk to such and such a location you will be able to burn this many calories. While that sounds innocent enough, it also reveals how many cupcakes that walk is equivalent to, as in walking this distance is the same calories as in a mini cupcake.
Google insists the intention behind the calorie count is to encourage folks to exercise more, although some think it’s just fat shaming people into it. The feedback was so bad that Google has already removed the feature.
