Breaking Up is Hard on You and Your Wallet

It’s never easy to get over a breakup, but it seems a lot of people spend a lot of money trying to ease that pain. These days it isn’t uncommon for folks to go on a shopping spree to make them feel better after a split, and some experts suggest it can be just what people need to get them out of their funk.

“I would actually encourage it,” best-selling author and New York relationship expert Susan Winter, tells “Moneyish.” “Anytime somebody spends money after a breakup, they are denoting an ending and clarifying a new beginning.”

Of course, shelling out those bucks may just be a temporary mood booster and for some they can prove quite costly. For example, New York University student shelled out between $1,500 and $2,000 on a new wardrobe after her nine-month relationship ended, while an Australian woman spent about $4,000 to visit a witch doctor to help her get over her ex.

And don't forget, there are other expenses that folks can incur after a split, and it could be anything from legal fees, to counseling, medication and the cost of dating again.  And if we’re talking the end of a marriage those expenses can be huge, with the average cost of divorce ranging between $15,000 and $30,000.
