The Power Rangers movie breaks ground with first gay big-screen superhero

It's not a huge plot point, but there is a small scene in SABAN's Power Rangers where it is revealed that Trini, the Yellow Ranger (played by Becky G), is a lesbian.

In the scene, Trini is going through relationship problems and it's assumed that it is with her "boyfriend," but eventually it's revealed that the issues are really "girlfriend problems."

Power Rangers director Dean Israelite told The Hollywood Reporter,

For Trini, really she’s questioning a lot about who she is. She hasn’t fully figured it out yet. I think what’s great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, ‘That’s OK.’ The movie is saying, ‘That’s OK,’ and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe.

It's a small moment, but the director says it's "pivotal" for the entire movie.
