Dave’s Weekend in Five Pictures: Training For my Pikes Peak Hike!

I came out to Colorado last Wednesday to chill, recharge, do some work around my house here and mostly to train for my Pikes Peak hike coming up in June.

I got in one training hike and the weather turned so I spent a lot of time reading, sitting in the jacuzzi, binging true crime shows. (Have you seen Joe Kenda: Homocide Hunter? What a GREAT show!)

It’s funny, cuz a lot of the day on Saturday I spent walking around on the property here shaking heavy, wet spring snow out of young trees. They’re not thick enough to support all that weight so they bend over and never quite recover and die.

I don’t have any pictures of that excitement, so let’s move on to the pics I do have!

This sign at the foot of the trail up Pikes Peak is probably 50 years old or more. It’s been shot at, burned and hacked at but it’s still there!

On to the trail! The first four miles are mostly steep with a lot of switchbacks. I got there late in the day so I only went up a mile then came back. The good news is it was pretty much effortless which means my training has been paying off!

On the way back from the trail, I saw a TV news crew doing a live shot and I recognized the red jacket from when my son Chase used to work there. I stopped to say hi and they both remembered Chase and had nice things to say about him! :-)

The snow started on Friday night and it was perfect for building a snowman. I thought he was cute enough, but a lot of people on Instagram said he looks like the stuff from which nightmares are made.

Sunday, I made Slow Cooker Beef and Brocoli. It was awesome! The recipe is super easy and would serve probably 3 at the most. I put in extra broccoli and 2 pounds of sirloin rather that the 1.5 the recipe calls for. Oh, and 2 tablespoons of sriracha instead of just 1 to give it a little extra spice. Recipe is linked below.

And that is it! I hope you had a good weekend! Thanks for looking at my pictures!

Here’s the recipe for the beef and broccoli!
