Dear Dave and the KDWB Morning Crew,
I am writing to nominate Alethia (Allie) Koronkiewicz to receive a Christmas wish. Allie has been a friend of mine for the past 4 years and she and her son have grown to be part of our family.
On Friday, November 8th at 6:30 AM, Allie was on her way to drop her 18-month-old son, Kylen off at daycare and proceed to her job as a Medical Assistant at Park Nicollet. She was only a mile from her home when a driver crossed the center line on Hwy 7 and hit Allie head-on. Her life was changed in an instant.
Kylen was fortunately still rear facing in the back seat and suffered very minor injuries; scratches and cuts from the broken glass as well as a sprained foot. Allie, on the other hand, was not as fortunate. She had to be cut out of her rolled vehicle and while they wanted to take her flight for life; they couldn't get a helicopter, so this poor girl had to endure an hour plus ambulance ride to HCMC where she underwent a 6-hour surgery. She had a compound fracture in her left leg; her femur bone shattered and went through her thigh. She has a hole in her left lower leg through and through the size of a dollar coin. Her right foot & ankle were sliced open. She fractured 3 disks in her back and had cuts, scrapes bruises, stiches and staples over her entire body. She will not be able to hold her little boy for months while she recovers.
Since she has been home, she has had several setbacks. A day after staples had been removed from her back, her incision split open and she had to go back to the hospital to get put back together. She can walk a little with a walker, but has been in such severe pain, she thought there was something else wrong, so back to the hospital she went. This time, they found she also had a fractured kneecap, that may require another surgery. She is in pain every day.
A little about Allie. She is a 23-year-old single mom who works full time as a medical assistant, part time as an Instructor for the Red Cross and is a student at Rasmussen College. She is selfless, dedicated and extremely motivated to succeed. She works so hard to simply pay her monthly bills and support her son. She purchased her first home a few months ago. Her smile and laugh can light up a room. She is so much fun to be around and makes the best of every situation. Even now, she tries as hard as she can to stay positive, although it certainly isn’t easy. She doesn’t have family in the area and needs help just to get through the day. My brother, who is a very good friend of hers, has taken a leave of absence from work and will stay with her for the next couple months. She has a very long road to recovery ahead of her.
My Christmas wish for Allie is for her to have the best holiday possible. She is not able to do much on her own and her bills are piling up already! Groceries are probably what she could use most! Gas cards would be very helpful for the multiple 60 mile each way tread back and forth to the doctor. She is not able to decorate her house for her very first Christmas in her new home, so any Holiday Cheer would be appreciated. Allie, along with some friends and family had rented a condo and purchased flights for a December Orlando vacation. They were supposed to be leaving tomorrow for Disney. Obviously, the trip had to be canceled. That was going to be Kylen’s Christmas present from Allie, so anything Mickey would be exciting for him. He could also use winter boots, a new winter coat, diapers and a toddler bed since Allie cannot lift him anymore to get him in his crib. His car seat was in an accident, so someone gave her one to use, but it is an infant one and he is too big for it. She is a very simple young lady who appreciates the necessities more so than the extravagant things in life.
Thank you for considering Allie and Kylen for this wish. I can’t thank you enough! My heart is so happy and grateful!
Warmest Regards,
Jodi
