Celebrities Who Left Hollywood at the Height of Their Fame

Hollywood isn't for everyone. Some people make it all the way to the top . . . and then climb back down. Here are 8 stars who quit showbiz at the height of their fame:

1.  Karyn Parsons: Not long after playing Hilary Banks on "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air", she got married and started a family. She also founded Sweet Blackberry, a nonprofit that teaches kids about Black history.

2.  Jonathan Taylor Thomas: He left "Home Improvement" before it even ended to concentrate on college. Now he's on the board of the actors' union, SAG-AFTRA.

3.  Erik Per Sullivan: He played Dewey on "Malcolm in the Middle", but he's not coming back for the reboot because he's a grad student. But he told Bryan Cranston he thinks it's great that they're doing it.

4.  Rick Moranis: He stepped away from the spotlight in the late '90s to raise his kids after his wife died of breast cancer. But he's FINALLY making his way back for "Spaceballs 2".

5.  Peter Ostrum: He has just one acting credit, but it's a big one: He played Charlie in the 1971 classic "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory". He quit the biz to become a dairy veterinarian. He also does fan conventions.

6.  Phoebe Cates: She became one of the biggest sex symbols of the '80s thanks to "Fast Times at Ridgemont High". She also starred in "Gremlins" and "Drop Dead Fred".

She married Kevin Kline in 1989, and pretty much called it a career. She does own a store called Blue Tree in New York City, though.

7.  Shirley Temple: One of the most famous child actors of all time, she retired in 1950, at the ripe old age of 22. She went into politics and became the U.S. ambassador to Ghana and Czechoslovakia.

8.  Mara Wilson: After star-making turns in "Mrs. Doubtfire""Matilda" and a few other films, she backed off her acting career to concentrate on writing. In 2016, she released a book called "Where Am I Now? True Stories of Girlhood and Accidental Fame".  (Check out more here.)
