Meghan McCain is reflecting on her late father John McCain on the one-year anniversary of his death.

Today marks a year after the former presidential candidate died after battling brain cancer at aged 81 on August 25, 2018. On Saturday (August 24), hours before the emotional anniversary, the 34-year-old View co-host shared a heartbreaking post on Instagram in his memory.

“Last year tomorrow, August 25th was the worst day of my life. I lost my hero. I miss my father every single day, I will for the rest of my life.” Meghan writes in the caption, along with two touching photos of her by the Vietnam War veteran’s side. “Grief is omnipresent and relentless. For every single person who has sent prayers, love & support to my family, we are truly grateful.”

“On this anniversary until his birthday after the 29th I am going to take a break from social media for reflection. The memory of my father’s life continues to guide me today, as it always will,” she continued. “Remember to cherish your loved ones and be grateful for every moment you have with them. I still can’t believe my heart didn’t stop when yours did Dad…”

The war hero passed away at his home in Sedona, Arizona, just days shy of his 82nd birthday. Arizonians gathered in mourning with flowers, American flags, and personal notes and posters at the Arizona Capitol to commemorate the man the town regarded as “The Maverick.”

Including Meghan, John is survived by six children — Andrew, Sidney, John, Douglas, James and Bridget — and wife Cindy.
