Petition Asks Disney To Make Leia An Official Disney Princess

Following Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher’s recent death, a Change.org petition is calling for Princess Leia to become an official Disney princess.

"After the tragic loss of Carrie Fisher, we feel that it is only fitting for Disney to do away with the rule that an official Disney princess must be animated and make Leia a full-fledged princess,” the petition reads. "This would be a wonderful way to remember Carrie and a welcoming to one of Disney's new properties that is beloved by millions."

“Disney had princesses and Leia was a Princess,” explained Cody Christensen, who started the petition. “Then I found out that Disney had set rules for who could and couldn't be a princess. With Carrie's death, I think that it's time to change the rules."

A father of five daughters, Christensen says princess movies are always playing at his house and as much as they’re fans of the current princesses, he thinks Leia would be a “strong, positive, awesome role model for my girls.”

The petition asks that Leia become the first live-action Disney princess and be given her own official coronation ceremony, just like each new Disney princess since Princess Tiana in 2009 has been given. So far more than 41,000 people have signed the petition.
