It's insane how a silly pun about denim outerwear has launched one of the bloodiest culture war battles ever, but that's where we are in this country right now.
You know what I'm talking about: Those American Eagle ads where Sydney Sweeney is in jeans and a denim jacket, seductively talking about her genetics, which leads to the tagline "Sydney Sweeney has great JEANS."
Some people on the extreme Left ridiculously overreacted by claiming the ads were coded messages about eugenics and white supremacy. And the extreme Right overreacted in Sydney's, and American Eagle's, defense.
According to a new poll, 15% of Americans now think saying someone has "great genes", with a G, is INAPPROPRIATE. But 53% say it's cool, and 31% aren't sure.
American Eagle released a statement, saying, quote, "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story.
"We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone."
(Meanwhile, Buzzfeed has "outed" Sydney as being a registered Republican since 2024.)
(So if you thought the Left was abandoning her and the Right was circling the wagons around her before . . . you can expect both sides to turn it up to 11 now.)
(But let's get serious: All this is, is a company making a sexy woman writhe around and speak in a sensuous, breathy voice in order to sell you something. They've been doing it forever and it's never gonna go outta style.)
(To think that American Eagle is sending coded messages to neo-Nazis is ridiculous.)
